Every once in a while a dog comes along who not only steals your heart but also breaks it a little.
Togo is that dog.
Togo is a 1-year-old male Siberian Husky who has already lived through more pain confusion and abandonment in his first year than many animals will in a lifetime.
But despite everything he’s endured he still has the brightest spark in his eyes the gentlest soul and a love for life that refuses to fade
Togo’s story begins in a pet store—specifically Petland a chain known for selling puppies sourced from high-volume breeders.
He was purchased as a small fluffy undeniably adorable puppy.
At that time he was just a few weeks old full of energy curiosity and the potential to grow into a loyal companion.
But as so often happens that promise was never fulfilled.
Togo was treated more like a novelty than a family member.
As he grew into the lively intelligent and active young dog Huskies are known to be his needs became more than his owners were willing—or perhaps able—to handle.
Instead of training him walking him or engaging him they began to pull away. And when Togo's playful puppy energy turned into behavior problems they made a decision that still stuns us.
They abandoned him.
Not surrendered to a shelter not rehomed responsibly—just left.
Alone.
On the side of a busy highway.
We don’t know exactly how long Togo wandered along the road dodging cars hungry terrified and confused.
We can only imagine the fear he must have felt waiting for someone to come back for him.
He was only 9 months old—still very much a puppy.
When he arrived at our rescue we took him to a vet where a microchip revealed the identity of his original owner.
We reached out hopeful.
Surely there had been some misunderstanding.
But when we contacted them they simply said “We don’t want him anymore.”
Just like that.
Just a life discarded like an unwanted object.
It would have been easy for Togo to shut down.
To lose trust in people.
To turn inward or lash out.
But that’s not who Togo is.
Instead he greeted his rescuers with a cautious wag and soon enough a full-body tail wag and the goofy Husky grin he still wears today.
Because underneath the pain and betrayal Togo is pure love
Once in our care Togo was fully vetted neutered and given a clean bill of health.
We began to see his true personality shine: goofy energetic loyal and affectionate.
He adores other dogs—whether they’re big small old or young he’s happiest when he has a canine companion to play with.
Even more touching Togo is wonderful with children including very young ones. He’s gentle patient and protective—a natural family dog even after his own family failed him.
But he’s not without his challenges. Togo struggles with separation anxiety which isn’t surprising given how he was abandoned.
He bonds quickly and deeply with people and it breaks his heart to be left alone.
He needs a family that understands that love and loyalty go both ways—and that he needs time patience and consistency to feel secure again.
And like many Huskies Togo is an escape artist.
He has been known to jump fences so he either needs a home with a tall secure yard or ideally someone who’s ready to give him the long daily walks mental stimulation and companionship that he craves.
Togo is not the right dog for every home.
He’s not good with cats—he’s too rough and the prey drive is just too strong.
He’s not a couch potato.
He’s an adventurer.
He’s not okay being alone all day while someone works a 9-to-5 job.
He needs someone.
A partner.
A family.
Someone who sees him really sees him and understands that what he needs most of all is belonging.
Despite what was done to him Togo still believes in people.
He still believes in love.
He still believes that the best part of his life is ahead of him—and we do too.
He is more than his breed.
More than his story.
Togo is a survivor.
He’s a teacher.
He’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of dog.
Now all he needs is a home that won’t give up on him.
One that will celebrate his quirks support him through his healing and give him the joy-filled life he has always deserved.
He will repay that kindness with unwavering loyalty endless playfulness and a love that never runs dry.
Togo’s story began with heartbreak but it doesn’t have to end that way.
