Cassidy is currently in a foster home and adoptable through the Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department. We believe Cassidy is a German Sheppard/Basenji mix. Her foster family brought her home from the shelter on May 23 at a year and a half old. Her transformation from a shy, scared girl to fun-loving and trusting was remarkable and heartwarming. She is house broken - not once has she made a mess in the house. She learns commands quickly and wants to please. Cassidy is very shy when approached by a stranger but curious enough to approach someone who is ignoring her. She is very good with other dogs, engaging in serious dog-play with both small and much larger dogs. She is a bit wary of some larger breeds but ends up playing undaunted after some exploration. Cassidy is a barkless dog. We now believe that along with GS she is part Basenji – one of the few barkless breeds. Basenji would account for her smaller size - at 40 lbs - for a GS mix. She “talks” in howls and moos which is also a Basenji trait. Although quiet, she is alert and knows when a stranger is at the door before the house owners do. Cassidy is high energy – running around in the mornings and evening and then resting through the heat of the day. Her current foster family has helped reduce her stress after being in the shelter and adapt to a loving family but cannot keep her and hopes to find a forever home for her as soon as possible. She would do best with active owners who will walk and hike with her daily and/or with another dog to run around with. Exercise has been her best therapy to reduce stress and improve her trust of others.
